Truman: "The Truman Doctrine"
Mr.President, Mr.Speaker, Members of the Congress of the United States:
The gravity of the situation which confronts the world today necessitates my appearance before a joint session of the Congress.
The foreign policy and the national security of this country are involved.
One aspect of the present situation, which I present to you at this time for your consideration and decision, concerns Greece and Turkey.
The United States has received from the Greek Government an urgent appeal for financial and economic assistance.
Preliminary reports from the American Economic Mission now in Greece and reports from the American Ambassador in Greece corroborate the statement of the Greek Government that assistance is imperative if Greece is to survive as a free nation.
I do not believe that the American people and the Congress wish to turn a deaf ear to the appeal of the Greek Government.
Greece is not a rich country.
Lack of sufficient natural resources has always forced the Greek people to work hard to make both ends meet.
Since 1940, this industrious, peace loving country has suffered invasion, four years of cruel enemy occupation, and bitter internal strife.
When forces of liberation entered Greece they found that the retreating Germans had destroyed virtually all the railways, roads, port facilities, communications, and merchant marine.
More than a thousand villages had been burned.
Eighty-five per cent of the children were tubercular.
Livestock, poultry, and draft animals had almost disappeared.
Inflation had wiped out practically all savings.
As a result of these tragic conditions, a militant minority, exploiting human want and misery, was able to create political chaos which, until now, has made economic recovery impossible.
Greece is today without funds to finance the importation of those goods which are essential to bare subsistence.
Under these circumstances, the people of Greececannot make progress in solving their problems of reconstruction.
Greece is in desperate need of financial and economic assistance to enable it to resume purchases of food, clothing, fuel, and seeds.
These are indispensable for the subsistence of its people and are obtainable only from abroad.
Greece must have help to import the goods necessary to restore internal order and security, so essential for economic and political recovery.
The Greek Government has also asked for the assistance of experienced American administrators, economists, and technicians to insure that the financial and other aid given to Greece shall be used effectively in creating a stable and self-sustaining economy and in improving its public administration.
The very existence of the Greek state is today threatened by the terrorist activities of several thousand armed men, led by Communists, who defy the governments authority at a number of points, particularly along the northern boundaries.
A Commission appointed by the United Nations security Council is at present investigating disturbed conditions in northern Greece and alleged border violations along the frontiers between Greece on the one hand and Albania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia on the other.
Meanwhile, the Greek Government is unable to cope with the situation.
The Greek army is small and poorly equipped.
It needs supplies and equipment if it is to restore authority of the government throughout Greek territory.
Greece must have assistance if it is to become a self-supporting and self-respecting democracy.
The United States must sup* this assistance.
We have already extended to Greececertain types of relief and economic aid.
But these are inadequate.
There is no other country to which democratic Greece can turn.
No other nation is willing and able to provide the necessary support for a democratic Greek government.
The British Government, which has been helping Greece, can give no further financial or economic aid after March 31st.
Great Britain finds itself under the necessity of reducing or liquidating its commitments in several parts of the world, including Greece.
We have considered how the United Nations might assist in this crisis.
But the situation is an urgent one, requiring immediate action, and the United Nations and its related organizations are not in a position to extend help of the kind that is required.
It is important to note that the Greek Government has asked for our aid in utilizing effectively the financial and other assistance we may give to Greece, and in improving its public administration.
It is of the utmost importance that we supervise the use of any funds made available to Greece in such a manner that each dollar spent will count toward making Greece self-supporting, and will help to build an economy in which a healthy democracy can flourish.
No government is perfect.
One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.
The Government of Greece is not perfect.
Nevertheless it represents eighty-five per cent of the members of the Greek Parliament who were chosen in an election last year.
Foreign observers, including 692 Americans, considered this election to be a fair expression of the views of the Greek people.
The Greek Government has been operating in an atmosphere of chaos and extremism.
It has made mistakes.
The extension of aid by this country does not mean that the United States condones everything that the Greek Government has done or will do.
We have condemned in the past, and we condemn now, extremist measures of the right or the left.
We have in the past advised tolerance, and we advise tolerance now.
Greeks [sic] neighbor, Turkey, also deserves our attention.
The future of Turkey, as an independent and economically sound state, is clearly no less important to the freedom-loving peoples of the world than the future of Greece.
The circumstances in which Turkey finds itself today are considerably different from those of Greece.
Turkey has been spared the disasters that have beset Greece.
And during the war, the United States and Great Britain furnished Turkey with material aid.
Nevertheless, Turkey now needs our support.
Since the war, Turkey has sought financial assistance from Great Britain and the United States for the purpose of effecting that modernization necessary for the maintenance of its national integrity.
That integrity is essential to the preservation of order in the Middle East.
The British government has informed us that, owing to its own difficulties, it can no longer extend financial or economic aid to Turkey.
As in the case of Greece, if Turkey is to have the assistance it needs, the United States must sup* it.
We are the only country able to provide that help.
I am fully aware of the broad implications involved if the United States extends assistance to Greece and Turkey, and I shall discuss these implications with you at this time.
One of the primary objectives of the foreign policy of the United States is the creation of conditions in which we and other nations will be able to work out a way of life free from coercion.
This was a fundamental issue in the war with Germany and Japan.
Our victory was won over countries which sought to impose their will, and their way of life, upon other nations.
To ensure the peaceful development of nations, free from coercion, the United States has taken a leading part in establishing the United Nations.
The United Nations is designed to make possible lasting freedom and independence for all its members.
We shall not realize our objectives, however, unless we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes.
This is no more than a frank recognition that totalitarian regimes imposed upon free peoples, by direct or indirect aggression, undermine the foundations of international peace, and hence the security of the United States.
The peoples of a number of countries of the world have recently had totalitarian regimes forced upon them against their will.
The Government of the United States has made frequent protests against coercion and intimidation in violation of the Yalta agreement in Poland, Rumania, and Bulgaria.
I must also state that in a number of other countries there have been similar developments.
At the present moment in world history nearly every nation must choose between alternative ways of life.
The choice is too often not a free one.
One way of life is based upon the will of the majority, and is distinguished by free institutions, representative government, free elections, guarantees of individual liberty, freedom of speech and religion, and freedom from political oppression.
The second way of life is based upon the will of a minority forcibly imposed upon the majority.
It relies upon terror and oppression, a controlled press and radio, fixed elections, and the suppression of personal freedoms.
I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.
I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way.
I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes.
The world is not static, and the status quo is not sacred.
But we cannot allow changes in the status quo in violation of the Charter of the United Nations by such methods as coercion, or by such subterfuges as political infiltration.
In helping free and independent nations to maintain their freedom, the United States will be giving effect to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
It is necessary only to glance at a map to realize that the survival and integrity of the Greek nation are of grave importance in a much wider situation.
If Greece should fall under the control of an armed minority, the effect upon its neighbor, Turkey, would be immediate and serious.
Confusion and disorder might well spread throughout the entire Middle East.
Moreover, the disappearance of Greece as an independent state would have a profound effect upon those countries in Europe whose peoples are struggling against great difficulties to maintain their freedoms and their independence while they repair the damages of war.
It would be an unspeakable tragedy if these countries, which have struggled so long against overwhelming odds, should lose that victory for which they sacrificed so much.
Collapse of free institutions and loss of independence would be disastrous not only for them but for the world.
Discouragement and possibly failure would quickly be the lot of neighboring peoples striving to maintain their freedom and independence.
Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East.
We must take immediate and resolute action.
I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of $400,000,000 for the period ending June 30, 1948.
In requesting these funds, I have taken into consideration the maximum amount of relief assistance which would be furnished to Greece out of the $350,000,000 which I recently requested that the Congress authorize for the prevention of starvation and suffering in countries devastated by the war.
In addition to funds, I ask the Congress to authorize the detail of American civilian and military personnel to Greece and Turkey, at the request of those countries, to assist in the tasks of reconstruction, and for the purpose of supervising the use of such financial and material assistance as may be furnished.
I recommend that authority also be provided for the instruction and training of selected Greek and Turkish personnel.
Finally, I ask that the Congress provide authority which will permit the speediest and most effective use, in terms of needed commodities, supplies, and equipment, of such funds as may be authorized.
If further funds, or further authority, should be needed for purposes indicated in this message, I shall not hesitate to bring the situation before the Congress.
On this subject the Executive and Legislative branches of the Government must work together.
This is a serious course upon which we embark.
I would not recommend it except that the alternative is much more serious.
The United States contributed $341,000,000,000 toward winning World War II.
This is an investment in world freedom and world peace.
The assistance that I am recommending for Greece and Turkey amounts to little more than 1 tenth of 1 per cent of this investment.
It is only common sense that we should safeguard this investment and make sure that it was not in vain.
The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want.
They spread and grow in the evil soil of poverty and strife.
They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died.
We must keep that hope alive.
The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms.
If we falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world.
And we shall surely endanger the welfare of this nation.
Great responsibilities have been placed upon us by the swift movement of events.
I am confident that the Congress will face these responsibilities squarely.

But there is also bad influence. Some of the young teenagers are addicted to com*r games and some even play games all night. Because of lacking in sleep those students can not focus on in the class . I have remembered such a piece of news . An excellent student flunked xxx考试不及格xxx because he could not concentrate on his study for being too indulged in com*r games. He spent nearly all the money on games which was earned by his fathers selling blood. When his father knelt down to beg him to return to school he was too numb to show any regret.
The most serious harm of com*r games come from their contents which affects teenagers mental health. Many games involve violence such as fighting and killing. When they enjoy the pleasure of success a violent turn of mind is developed and rooted in them which may induce future violent behaviour in their life.
So when com*rs entertaining function is highly spoken of such a problem does deserve our serious concern.

With the development of technology more and more people are fond of using Internet. It is particularly popular among young people. Just like the coin has two sides internet also has its own advantages and disadvantages.
First of all the Internet has brought people great convenience in getting information entertainment and contact with each other. As for our students it is a useful tool when we meet problems. When we are tired a piece of light music will help us relax. If we have free time we can enjoy movies or interesting cartoons. What’s more we can also watch live programs on the internet or see it later if we are not available at that time.
But there is also bad influence. Some of the young teenagers are addicted to computer games and some even play games all night. Because of lacking in sleep those students can not focus on in the class . As a result they may fail in the exam. When they realize it is wrong to spend too much time playing games it’s already too late.
I have remembered such a piece of news . An excellent student flunked xxx考试不及格xxx because he could not concentrate on his study for being too indulged in computer games. He spent nearly all the money on games which was earned by his father's selling blood. When his father knelt down to beg him to return to school he was too numb to show any regret.
The most serious harm of computer games come from their contents which affects teenagers ' mental health. Many games involve violence such as fighting and killing. When they enjoy the pleasure of success a violent turn of mind is developed and rooted in them which may induce future violent behaviour in their life.
So when computers' entertaining function is highly spoken of such a problem does deserve our serious concern.
In addition long time's working before computer also does harm to health. The radiation from the computer can arose many uncomfortable feelings. like a headache poor eyesight.
At last people who are fond of making friends on line should also be careful. Many convicts use Internet as a way to cheat. Although it has many disadvantages Internet has become an indispensable part of people's life in recent years. 大家好!
有一个故事，说的是一头驴，背着两捆草，饿了，到底放下哪一捆来吃呢?一直犹豫不决，结果饿死了。这个故事有些夸张，但人生很多路口，大家都会在路口上徘徊。做选择是很难很痛苦的，这边有诱惑，那边也有诱惑。到底选择哪个?我的同学都出国了，我是不是也应该去新东方学*准备考托福?我的发小考公务员了，我是不是也要买书复*了?电视上说有个人小学没毕业做电商就发财了，我是不是也要到淘宝上开个店铺?
你今天听到东边热闹往东跑，明天听到西边热闹，就掉头往西边跑。很多年下来，你就会变成一个没头苍蝇，东一榔头西一棒槌，疲于奔命，没有积累。我认为，如果你觉得自己还年轻，那一定要花点时间想一想，不说长了，就是未来的十到十五年时间，你到底要想成为怎样的人?未来十到十五年，你到底最想获得什么?这是最重要的。这个东西，你可以说是梦想，也可以说是价值观。
为什么?因为你一旦想清楚了，以后你无论做什么判断，做什么选择，那就简单多了。有助于实现我梦想的，我就干。没帮助，我就放弃。把梦想锚定，短期内不管你遇到什么诱惑，遭遇什么困难，都不会左右你判断和选择。
在这点上，我很幸运，在困难面前我很少摇摆，经常是一拍脑袋就做决定了。因为我上高中的时候，就想清楚了我这辈子要干什么。我不想要进到一个仰人鼻息的单位去，我就梦想着要开个自己的电脑公司编软件，自己安排生活和命运，而且做好了，很多人都用，这样很有成就感。
一旦有了这个想法，所有的选择都变得非常简单。比如我上高中的时候在全国物理竞赛上获过奖，很多大学都愿意录取我，各种专业五花八门。其中一所比较著名的大学，想录取我上食品工程专业。我父母听说以后十分高兴，他们经历过吃不饱饭的年代，觉得上了这个专业，以后就不愁吃饭了。但我坚决不同意，因为我对食品不感兴趣，我就是想编软件。当时西安交大也来录取我，我当时也不知道西安交大是干什么的，以为是修铁路的大学。但西安交大让我上计算机系，那我就去了，因为符合我的目标。相反，我很多同学根据当时热门不热门来选专业，很多人选了国际贸易。这种选择看起来很聪明，但现在看来，这未必是他们真正想要的，也未必是自己能够施展才华的地方。
你如果说，我的目标很简单，就是年薪50万。对这样的目标，我的建议是，目标不能太物质化。太短期、太物质化的目标不能内化成你的梦想。像年薪50万、100万这样的目标，你可能很快就实现了，然后就失去了梦想，没了目标，跟有些拿到巨额拆迁款的人一样，沉溺于赌博，把自己的未来都毁了；或者有的物质化目标很难实现，比如你想成为*首富，可能你很快就放弃了。我认为，只有这种非利益化的梦想和目标，才能长期激励一个人不断地去追求。
我大学毕业时，也面临着选择。到底是去南方的某家银行工作，拿一月3000元的高薪，还是去北京的一家大型电脑公司，拿一月800元的工资?我没什么犹豫就选择了后者，因为只有到电脑公司，才能学*怎么做软件，才有机会实现我的梦想。
后来我离开这家电脑公司到互联网里去创业，有很多人说：“你太有勇气了，放弃了高薪和职位。”但是我觉得这不需要什么勇气。它已经不适合我了，没法帮助我实现自己的梦想。这些别人认为很珍贵的东西，对我来说是Nothing。所以，你的梦想和目标不跟物质挂钩，物质就不会成为你选择时的掣肘。
对于高中生来说，诱惑可能是某个看起来前景良好的专业。对于大学生来说，诱惑可能是一份待遇丰厚、人人艳羡的工作。但是随着你越走越远，物质的诱惑越来越大，你就更需要梦想这个坚定的罗盘来指引。
当年我要离开雅虎，因为在里面不能创新，很多好想法实现不了，这种氛围让我窒息，让我忍无可忍。雅虎说，要提前辞职，会扣我3000万美金。即使放到现在，这也是一笔不小的数目。很多人替我惋惜，说你再混个一年半载的。我不想混，也最痛恨混。对我来说，自由是最重要的，干自己想干的事儿是最重要的。于是，我再一次的创业。于是，有了360。
可以说，到今天我的梦想从来都没有变过，只是我所在的行业从计算机发展到了互联网，发展到了手机领域。我的目标很简单，一直都是要做出别人从来没有想过的产品，我的产品能够改变千千万万人的生活和工作方式。这个梦想，可以说我已经实现了，也可以说我还没有实现，因为我觉得还有更多好想法可以去做。

大家下午好！我今天演讲的题目是《无人需要的数字》。
爱尔兰作家伯明罕年轻时曾在一所乡村小学做过多年的教师。那所学校既偏僻又破旧，校舍是由废弃的农场改造而成的，学生最多时也没过百，一片没有任何体育设施的空地是孩子们课间嬉戏玩耍的乐园。加上伯明罕，学校共有三名教
师，这两名教师因为忍受不了学校的艰苦和荒凉，相继离开了学校，只留下伯明罕这唯一的教师兼校长坚守在学校。
伯明罕有一颗爱孩子的心，将自己的所学所悟传授给一个个天真烂漫的学生，是他求之不得的事情。他吃住都在学校，环境恶劣，条件艰苦，除了学生，一年难得见到几个人，这些对他来说都不算什么，最令他受不了的是，每年他都得几次徒步40里地到当地的教育部门送各种报表。
有些报表在他看来纯属浪费时间，毫无一点用处。比如有一个报表要求每个学校每年报送一次校舍的面积，自从伯明罕来到这个乡村学校，校舍面积从来就没有过一*方米的增减。伯明罕有一次负气地拒送这张表格，没过多久，教育部门就派人光顾了这所几乎被人遗忘的学校，警告伯明罕说，如果再不按时报送他们所要求的各种报表，他们就将关闭这所学校。从那以后，伯明罕虽然心中充满不满，但再也不敢怠慢。
前几年，伯明罕都是如实地填写那个不变的数字，表格送上去后就如同石沉大海，再无任何反应。这一年，伯明罕突发奇想，决定变化一下数字，他将校舍面积乘二以后得出的数字填在了报表上，报上去后仍然没有得到任何反馈。第二年，他将数字在上年的基础上又增加了一倍，仍然是没人理睬。此后数年，他都如法炮制，一次增加一倍，不断膨胀的数字丝毫没有引起教育部门的注意。直到有一年，伯明罕望着自己填写的数字，决定计算一下，如果自己的学校真有这么大面积校舍的话，那究竟有多大。计算出的结果令他大吃一惊，他上报的"学校"太大了，不仅远远大于圣保罗大教堂，而且远大于爱尔兰的任何一所学校，甚至还大于剑桥大学和牛津大学。
伯明罕暗自猜测，校舍面积不断扩大符合教育官员的要求，所以虽然没有任何反馈，但也没人来学校找事。
如果将校舍面积缩小，教育部门会不会派人来查访呢？伯明罕将大得惊人的校舍面积缩小了一半报了上去，几个月过去了，仍然没人理睬。以后几年，伯明罕都成倍缩小数字，直到他告别学校，都没有见到教育官员的影子。
伯明罕最终明白，他所上报的大大小小的数字，其实根本没有一个人会哪怕是心不在焉地瞄上一眼，没有人需要这个数字，他们需要的只是那张报表，不，他们连报表也不需要，需要报表的是流于形式的所谓的条款、规章、规定或制度。
多年以后，伯明罕在一篇文章中提到了这段经历，他说："我渐渐认识到：条款、规章、规定或制度并不可恶，可恶的是那些随意制订并机械而刻板地使用它们的官员们。这段经历给我的最大帮助是，它让我实实在在、真真切切地领悟到了——什么叫*，什么叫官僚？！"

张海迪1955年出生在山东半岛文登县的一个知识分子家庭里。5岁的时候，胸部以下完全失去了知觉，生活不能自理。医生们一致认为，象这种高位截瘫病人，一般很难活过27岁。在死神的威胁下，张海迪意识到自己的生命也许不会长久了，她为没有更多的时间工作而难过，更加珍惜自己的分分秒秒，用勤奋的学*和工作去延长生命。
她在日记中写到：“我不能碌碌无为地活着，活着就要学*，就要多为群众做些事情。既然是颗流星，就要把光留给人间，把一切奉献给人民。”

Now, I think one of the reasons -- I'll try to convince you today — is that we have a fundamental misconception about the power of time. Every one of you knows that the rate of change slows over the human lifespan, that your children seem to
change by the minute but your parents seem to change by the year. But what is the name of this magical point in life where change suddenly goes from a gallop to a crawl? Is it teenage years? Is it middle age? Is it old age? The answer, it turns out, for most people, is now, wherever now happens to be. What I want to convince you today is that all of us are walking around with an illusion, an illusion that history,

Let me give you some data to back up that claim. So here's a study of change in people's personal values over time. Here's three values. Everybody here holds all of them, but you probably know that as you grow, as you age, the balance of these values shifts. So how does it do so? Well, we asked thousands of people. We asked half of them to predict for us how much their values would change in the next 10 years, and the others to tell us how much their values had changed in the last 10 years. And this enabled us to do a really interesting kind of ***ysis, because it allowed us to compare the predictions of people, say, 18 years old, to the reports of people who were 28, and to do that kind of ***ysis throughout the lifespan.

Here's what we found. First of all, you are right, change does slow down as we age, but second, you're wrong, because it doesn't slow nearly as much as we think. At every age, from 18 to 68 in our data set, people vastly underestimated how much change they would experience over the next 10 years. We call this the "end of history" illusion. To give you an idea of the magnitude of this effect, you can connect these two lines, and what you see here is that 18-year-olds anticipate changing only as much as 50-year-olds actually do.

And what we find, well, you've seen it twice now, and here it is again: people predict that the friend they have now is the friend they'll have in 10 years, the vacation they most enjoy now is the one they'll enjoy in 10 years, and yet, people who are 10 years older all say, "Eh, you know, that's really changed."

Now, in a perfectly rational world, these should be the same number, but we overpay for the opportunity to indulge our current preferences because we overestimate their stability.

my great pleasure to share my dream with you today.When I was a child, I wanted to be a teacher. My father was a teacher, and he taught me a lot. I worshiped him very much. On my tenth birthday, he asked me,“What do you want to be when you grow up?”I answered proudly,“I want to be a teacher like you!”On hearing this, my father was very happy and said to me, “Work hard and your dream will come true.” Not long ago, one of my primary school teachers was ill. She wanted me to take her place for two weeks. I was glad but nervous. My father said to me,“This is a good chance. Seize it! I wish you success!” When I came into the classroom, the children were very happy.
I introduced myself to them. Soon, I got on well with them. They all liked me and I loved them. With my father and headmaster's help, I did the work very well. Now, I often miss those lovely children. That experience had made me even more interested in being a teacher in the future.
Father had a family, these children often squabble. He has no way to dissuade them, but to let them have a look not gregarious evils example. What are my career goals? I didn’t have it, which was a good thing because our community at that time was so small. So for me when I graduated from school. I was serious I had my simple goals, one is to get a job, two, it is basically to get an apartment, so I can be independent.
And then I went to Harvard Business School. I graduated from Harvard Business School, and because my family was in business. I decided to go into banking, to get some experience in banking. I didn’t understand so much about what banking was all about, but I learned. I worked for Citi Group, and when I was in the middle of working in Citi Group for 4 years, I had an opportunity to work at the White House because Citi Group had a special program. They selected outstanding performers within the bank and then gave them opportunity to support them for an intern in the government. I was selected as a White House fellow. I worked at the White House for one year. It was a difficult time, not easy, but I was so excited. It was so interesting because there was no Chinese, no Asian at the White House at that time, so I felt I was blazing a new trail for other Asian Americans. And I was learning a lot to be a better leader in the future. I worked for the White House for a year.
The President at that time was Wilson Reagan. He was from California. I grew up in New York. I had never been to California, so I decided to go to California, so I found a job in Bank of America in California and moved to California. I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t have friends there, but I was excited. I just wanted to see what California was like. So I was within California for 3 years and one day I got a phone call from Secretary Elizabeth Dole, and she was the Secretary of Transportation, and she needed someone who understood banking which I gained the experience from Citi Bank, and she also needed someone who understood shipping which I also had gained in Bank of America, so the two expert teams really helped me to get the job that she had admired. She had a portfolio (证券投资组合) in the Department of Transportation that was losing $1.8 a year, and she needed a banker to go and clear it up. So within one weekend I flew back from California, found an apartment in Washington D.C and started work on Monday. This is Maritime Administration. I worked there for 2 years and learned a great deal about the government. Around 2 years later, I was appointed Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. The reason why I was appointed was because the previous chairman of Federal Maritime Commission had passed away suddenly. The government needed someone who understood shipping, who had been in the government in shipping, who can be the Chairman. So once again my particular background in shipping, transportation and banking was very important, so I was the Chairman for a year, and then a new president came in. It was the first President Bush, and he asked me to be the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Transportation. At that time I was 35, though older than you, very very young. I was the youngest Deputy Secretary in the whole government and I was also the first Asian American Deputy Secretary in United States government.
And then in 1992, more than 20 years ago, such a long time ago, President Bush lost his re-election. When he loses re-election, what happened to America is that everybody who was with him goes. So I joined United Way of America. United Way of America was the NO.1 charity in America. I was there for 4 years.
I had little time to get married at the age of 39. It was very late. My husband, as you know, is the leader of Congress. He is a very good husband. He does his own laundry, he cooks and helps me with the house too. He is very encouraging women. I think it is really important to find someone who is going to be your life partner because they will help you adapt your life and they will help you adapt to your career as well.
In 1996, I wanted a break, so I joined Think Tank where I took some time to study and learn more about American political system, how to get ideas across, because America is a very confrontational society. People are arguing all the time, so some people are saying this, some people are saying that, and it’s OK. There is a lot of fighting back and forth. And then in 20xx, President George W. Bush was getting ready for his president chosen, and I had known him before, because I had companied with him for his father, and I knew him also at Harvard Business School. President George W. Bush was class of 71, and I was the class of 1979, so we knew each other from that as well. You will be interested to know that I was actually supposed to get, I thought, Department of Transportation, but nominate of Department of Transportation, so I was very disappointed.
I can tell you a lesson that if you face a disappointment, NO. 1, you must always think of a long term, so even though it can be a disappointment, don’t be discouraged. If you handle the disappointment well, there will be lots of other opportunities. So indeed, I was originally not offered, but I was indicated that Secretary of Labor was a position that they wanted for me. I wasn’t very familiar with labor as much as I was familiar with transportation. So I was hoping to be appointed to transportation. When it did not happen, I was very calm and I thanked the President and his team for considering me. I wish them well in their new administration, thinking that I will not be going to be a part of it. 2 weeks afterwith, the President nominate for the Secretary of Labor position encountered difficulties in confirmation hearing. In United States, the President proposes a Secretary, and then the Congress, the Senate approves. So the original choice for the Secretary of Labor encountered difficulties in her confirmation process, and she had to drop out(退出). So the White House, the President had to find a new Secretary of Labor, someone they trusted, someone they know, can clear and gain the approval of the Senate, who had no blemish on their records, so they can go through the confirmation process very easily. They approached me again and asked me whether I would be interested in accepting the position of the Secretary of Labor, so that was how I became the Secretary of Labor.
I wasn’t the first choice because my world at that time was so small that there were so few Asian Americans in the government at that time. There was no guide, no one to tell me what to expect, but what I did find helpful was what my parents were talking, you have to have courage, interest and curiosity. I think one thing my parents talked to me a great deal of is curiosity. You have to have interest, you have to have curiosity, and if you are curious, you will go on and seek more doors and more opened and these doors opened for you, if you have persistence, planned ahead, and if you have the will to persist. The world is changing so rapidly, so you have the same opportunities for you. I can’t tell you what the opportunities are, but if you have interest, and have the will, and you have the confidence, you will have a lot of opportunities.

This morning I went to the market to buy some vegetables with my parents. On the way we all highly praised a young man in western-style clothes and leather shoes who was riding by. To our happiness， a girl in plain dress ran forward at once， helped the lady up and took her home. We all praised the girl.
From this we know we cannot judge a person by his appearance. A person who is dressed beautifully may not have a beautiful soul. Only a person who has a beautiful soul is really beautiful.

I agree with it. As a student, I should say, university shouldn't cut off electricity at dormitory at night. The original intention for university to cut off electricity is to ensure our rest for some students will stay up very late if there is nothing to limit them. However, these students are minority. Most students have regular timetable. What more, we are now already in university, I think we should be treated like high school students any longer. Especially in summer hot days, no electricity at night would be a nightmare to all students. We can't fall asleep without electric fans. I can't just imagine that. Love——the key to motivate our students Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, It is a great honor to be chosen to speak here. I value this chance of sharing teaching experience with distinguished teachers very much. To be honest I felt rather nostalgic when somebody told me I would make a speech before all of you fine people. I can still remember when I made my first speech in college. My heart would have jumped out of my chest if I hadn’t tried my best to control my breath. The reason lies in the fact that I really didn’t know what to say at that time! Well today, being a teacher of English for some years in Shenzhen, I have a strong sense of responsibility, which always fills me with strength and confidence. I am from Xinzhou Middle School located in the west part of Shenzhen. There are two extremes in my school. About 38% are from local resident families, whose parents are rich and some even rich enough to own several buildings. But some of the children in such families turned out to be slow in their lessons. They seem to have everything but the motivation of learning. However, About 60% of the students are from working class families in the villages near by, whose parents hold temporary residence identities. Sometimes when we visit these students at home we noticed that a large proportion of their living standards are very critical. Some don’t even have desks good enough to finish their homework on. No wonder they appear quite reluctant to pay enough attention to the teachers in classes, and always find excuses not to finish their homework. And according to assessment criteria there are 40% students struggling to get a pass in the English learning. Some even can not make a proper sentence before they are going to take the matriculation examinations. I still remember once I saw my student coming to school with one arm hanging on her neckk. When asked she just said she was careless when she run across a pond, fell down and broke her arm. But later I got to know that she fell from the place she sleeps on the temporary second floor at home, where half of it is a small shop in the village, while she was climbing down the ladder. At that time she was in a hurry to go to school. Not until then did I realized how hard it is for some of our students to manage to survive in Shenzhen, let along concentrate in learning their lessons at school. I believe if children live in poverty, they learn to fight for their future, if children live in comfort they learn to enjoy themselves. Then come the question, “How could I help them?” “What do they need most?” After some years of practicing I got to know three golden rules in English teaching in such kind of schools. Rule No.1 Getting to know what exactly problems in our students’ learning English have and trying best to give them individual instructions; Rule No.2 Try best to build up their confidence, let them have a taste of success. Make them believe that English is not that difficult as they thought to be; Rule No.3 Never trying to teach them the knowledge of English until they really mastered their own way of studying. For the most valuable knowledge is not the knowledge itself; it is the learning strategy. Rule No. 4 The most important aspect in teaching here is love we cherish during teaching. If we don’t love our students whole-heartedly we will never succeed in secondary education in Shenzhen. So from what my experience, “love” is the key to motivate our students! Thank you!
爱是激励学生们的关键，女士们，先生们，我很荣幸能在这里发言。我很珍惜这个机会与各位老师分享教学经验。坦白地说，当有人告诉我我将在你们所有人面前做演讲时，我感到非常的怀念。我还记得我在大学时做的第一次演讲。如果我没有尽我所能控制我的呼吸，我的心就跳了出来。原因在于我真的不知道该说什么！今天，作为一名英语老师，在深圳有几年的英语，我有很强的责任感，这一责任感总是充满力量和信心。我是忻州市深圳中学的一所中学。我的学校有2个极端。大约38%是来自当地居民家庭，他们的父母是有钱人，有的甚至是富人，还可以拥有几栋房屋。但是，一些孩子在这样的家庭中，在他们的课程中被证明是慢的。他们似乎拥有一切，但学*的动机。然而，约有60%的学生是来自工薪阶层家庭的村庄附*，其父母持有临时居住身份。有时当我们拜访这些学生在家里时，我们注意到他们的生活水*的很大一部分是非常重要的。有些人甚至连桌子都不够好，还没有完成作业。怪不得他们似乎很不情愿地在课堂上给予足够的重视，并且总是找借口不完成作业。根据评估标准，有40%名学生在英语学*中努力获得通过。有的人甚至在考试前都不能作出适当的`判决。我还记得有一次我看到我的学生来到学校，一只胳膊挂在她的脖子上。当她问她只是说她是粗心，当她跑过一个池塘，摔了下来，摔断了她的胳膊。但后来我知道她从一个地方掉下来，她睡在一个临时二楼的家里，那里有一半是一个小商店在村里，而她爬上了梯子。当时她正赶着去上学。直到那时，我才意识到，我们的一些学生在深圳设法生存下来是多么困难，让他们集中精力学*他们在学校的功课。我相信如果孩子生活在贫困中，他们学会为自己的未来奋斗，如果孩子生活在舒适的生活中，他们学会享受自己的生活。然后问这个问题，“我怎么能帮助他们？“他们最需要的是什么？”“经过几年的实践，我在这样的学校里，在英语教学中有三条黄金法则。规则第一，要知道我们学生学*英语到底有什么问题，并尽最大的努力去给他们单独的指导；第二，第二条尽量增强他们的信心，让他们尝到成功的滋味。使他们相信英语并不是他们想象的那样困难；第三，从来没有试图教他们知识，直到他们真正掌握了自己的学*方式。对最有价值的知识本身不是知识本身，它是学*策略。规则4在教学中最重要的方面是我们在教学中所珍惜的爱。如果我们不爱我们的学生完全成功的中学教育在深圳我们将永远。因此，从我的经验，“爱”是激励我们的学生的关键！谢谢你！
21st century is the century of technology. Nowadays， technology is everywhere around us. The development of technology has a significant affact toward the society. Several technologies that we usually use are the internet， computer， and cellphone. These new technologies make our life much easier and better.
First， the development of computer changes our life. Decades ago， people needed to do lots of complex calculation on hand because they did not have computer， and more obvious， they did not have the software for calculation. As the result of that， people spent hours on the equations that a computer can solve in just a minute. Since the development of computer， people are able to use some kind of software to compute lots of complex functions and mathematical calculation. Computer becomes the most helpful equipment for the sciencists because they can use their time more efficiently.
Also， internet is another useful tool for us today. The development of internet brings a great impact toward the society. Instead of going to library and fliping all the books to figure out some information， we can just sim*** use a mouse and click on the website to do research. The internet leads us to a place where we can find unlimited information and resources. It makes our life much easier and better.
The last technology is cellphone. Nowadays， many people have a cellphone. But it just appears on the market for about 10 years. It is very convenience to the users because we can talk to anyone we want with a phone as small as a wallet. Also， we can communicate with others by making a phone call instead of sending letters. It is very fast and useful way to communicate.
